Charting Career Horizons: SEGians Visit to Petronas Corporate Office

In a bid to broaden their understanding of the dynamic realms of chemical and energy sectors, 15 zealous chemical engineering students from SEGi embarked on a transformative industrial visit to the Department of Operational Excellence, Development Upstream at the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur on October 16, 2023.

The prestigious PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, welcomed the students to its operational hub, providing invaluable insights into the intricacies of the industry. Ranked 216th in the Fortune Global 500 list for 2022, PETRONAS stands as a global leader in the energy sector.

The students were greeted by Mohd. Jarofidz B Mohd Jani, Acting Head of Technical Excellence, an esteemed member of the Industrial Advisory Panel for the Department of Chemical Engineering at SEGi University. His welcoming remarks set the tone for a day filled with enriching experiences.

Experienced technical managers from the Technical Excellence unit, namely W Hariz Fadli Bin W Shafie (Asset Integrity unit), Mohd. Tarmidhi M Tarmizi (Reliability & Maintenance unit), and Mohd. Aisamuddin Pi Remli (Production & Operations unit), delivered insightful talks on PETRONAS Business and Operations Overview. The technical presentations covered topics ranging from asset integrity to reliability and maintenance, providing students with a holistic view of PETRONAS’ operations.

The visit extended beyond the confines of the corporate office as students explored the intricate operations of PETRONAS in both upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors. They were introduced to PETRONAS’ global operations and educated on alternative energy sources such as solar and hydrogen, aligning with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies and NetZero Carbon initiatives.

The industrial exposure proved particularly beneficial for students enrolled in the ECE4433 Fuel and Energy Utilization course. The knowledge imparted by the speakers resonated with the students, fueling their motivation to contribute to the energy industry. The speakers underscored the significance of multidisciplinary teamwork and the essential attributes engineers need to cultivate for career advancement.
