SEGi University Promotes Vision Care at Stroke Survivors

On a sunny Sunday, the 10th of September, 2023, from 10 am to 3 pm, a remarkable event unfolded at the Stroke Survivors Gathering in Kajang, Selangor. This unique initiative brought together the Faculty of Optometry & Vision Sciences (FoOVS) from SEGi University and stroke survivors, aiming to create awareness about vision impairments among this resilient community.

At the forefront of this meaningful event were Ms. Eli Aimi Shakira Amran and six dedicated students from SEGi University. Their mission was clear – to provide eye screenings to stroke survivors and offer guidance to those grappling with vision impairments.

Throughout the event, this dedicated team successfully screened approximately 30 stroke survivors. Their compassionate approach and professional expertise ensured that each individual received the attention they deserved. Importantly, for some stroke survivors with significant vision issues, the team made vital referrals to the EyeCare facility at SEGi University’s Kota Damansara campus. These referrals will facilitate comprehensive eye examinations and tailored vision impairment management.

The Stroke Survivors Gathering in Kajang marked a significant milestone as the first-ever outreach event by SEGians. This event underlined the university’s commitment to serving and supporting local communities.

One of the key takeaways from this event was the realization that awareness of visual impairment among stroke survivors is remarkably low. With this in mind, SEGi University’s participation in the event aimed not only to conduct screenings but also to provide valuable information and support. This support is instrumental in aiding stroke survivors on their journey towards recovery and well-being.

The event was more than just a day of screenings; it was a testament to the power of community outreach and the significance of sharing knowledge and resources. SEGi University’s FoOVS and its students made a difference by contributing their skills, compassion, and expertise to a community that often goes unnoticed. As the event concluded, the hope to do more for the community burned brighter than ever.

In summary, SEGi University’s involvement in the Stroke Survivors Gathering in Kajang was a true embodiment of the institution’s commitment to community welfare. The day served as a reminder of the importance of awareness, support, and collaboration in addressing the unique challenges faced by stroke survivors, particularly regarding vision impairments. This event was a stepping stone towards making a lasting impact, and it is a testament to the caring spirit of the university and its students.
