Derek Toh, founder and CEO of WOBB, delivered five stories that will change your life

Recently, on 16 November 2018, SEGi Aspiring Entrepreneurs Club (AEC) organised one of its Power Talk featuring Derek Toh, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of WOBB, a Malaysian job search platform founded in 2014, with the title ‘Entrepreneurial Journey – Building your career in the first 10 years’ at SEGi College Subang Jaya. 

Toh shared his bitter-sweet journey of becoming a self-made, successful business man, inspiring philosophies, tips and advice through six engaging short stories; The Rich Entrepreneur, The Farmer, Please Mentor Me, I was a Director, and Chase your Dreams to more than 70 SEGi students.

Toh admitted that he has given similar talks to university students previously. However, it was his first time giving a talk and conveying important messages and advices with a series of short stories to his audience, “I think it would be easier to engage the students by telling short stories that are relevant to them in the near future, and the moral of the story would be more memorable for the students. This power talk series is a good initiative for universities to organise as it provide students with career advices before they graduate.”

“The first few years of an individual's career move can have a major impact and can determine the rest of their career paths. Hence, I am hoping to help the students in SEGi by giving them some career advices to prepare them well before they join the workforce. The resume clinic that we organise will also help the students in their first step into their career journey,” added Toh.

Tengku Puteri Umairah, SEGi College Subang Jaya second year Bachelor of Accounting and Finance student found the talk unique, very interesting and useful, “From the talk, Mr. Derek Toh shared five stories regarding how to become a successful entrepreneur, but from every each story it has a lesson or moral. I remember a few quotes that inspired me, such as we need to remember who we are today and every day because this is not the destination, and to become a successful person, there will be ups and down, so we need to stay calm and always push forward.”

“In addition, after the talk, WOBB held a Curriculum Vitae (CV) clinic which touched on how to have a good CV and what the requirement that current company need. From that, I had learned something new and have an idea how to create my CV in the future. Furthermore, WOBB also introduced their new mobile application called WOBB, which makes it easier for young people like me to find the right job,” shared Tengku Puteri Umairah.

For Fatin Munirah Azwel, SEGi College Subang Jaya second year Bachelor of Arts Business and Management student, the talk allow her to gain the knowledge to further make improvement for her career. “The talk introduce the WOBB mobile application that can help me find a job upon graduation that suit my interest and passion. I also found the topic is really interesting and the different story journeys made me want to know more, stay humble always and finding your passion may include some struggle before finding a job that we love.”

SEGi University & Colleges believe in providing opportunities to its students in bringing out their best talents to carve successful career paths. One of the step in achieving this, is inspiring budding entrepreneurs to go after their entrepreneurial dream. Starting in July this year, Aspiring Entrepreneurs Club (AEC), a student-led organisation at SEGi started the Power Talk Series. The talk series provide SEGi students the opportunity to learn directly from leading academics and high-profile leaders from the public, private and voluntary sectors, such as Tan Sri Clement Hii, SEGi Group Managing Director, and Mr. CK Khong, Marketing Manager for HERMO, an online Beauty Shop for Malaysia.
