SEGi’s Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology students had a remarkable opportunity to visit the Department of Blood Transfusion at Sarawak General Hospital on 3 November 2023. This visit aimed to provide students with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the critical role played by the blood transfusion unit in hospitals.
During the visit, the students were divided into groups and taken to two sections of the department: the Clinical Transfusion Unit and the Blood Donation Unit. Under the guidance of experienced medical laboratory technologists, the students had the chance to explore various aspects of these units. They were introduced to blood grouping and cross-matching tests using the gel card method, as well as techniques for handling red blood cells, plasma, and white blood cell components within the Clinical Transfusion Unit.
