DESCRIPTION

Dentistry Course in Malaysia
Dentists are the experts of the oral health profession; identifying and caring for oral diseases and wounds of the general public.

The most essential scope of dentistry is specialised dental care. These dentists are the general practitioners (GPs) of the dentistry scene and have their very own practices. Like GPs, general dentists will come across all ranges of dental issues and treat all types of patients from all walks of life.

This profession can be summed up as the component of medicine that directly deals with the diagnosis, study, prevention and treatment of injuries, diseases and abnormalities of the jaw, mouth and teeth. Dentistry is also a well-renowned professional career that displays extensive care, the expertise and empathy when handling different patients.

A Dentistry Degree at SEGi
The SEGi University Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five-year programme with the goal of nurturing highly capable and experienced dental professionals. Students are given real-life training through early patient contact and on-site clinical training to increase their knowledge on oral diseases. This progressive curriculum is taught through a problem- solving module that stresses on contextual learning of dental science. This is to ensure that students can correctly identify issues through direct engagement.

Graduates of this programme can register and practice at any medical institution without additional exams. Should you wish to join the public sector, you will be stationed at health clinics, community hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health, educational establishments or the armed forces. After obtaining key experience in general practice, you are free to enrol in a postgraduate programme leading all the way to qualifying as a specialist practitioner.

CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES

As a general practitioner, you can choose from a wide range of specialisations consisting of:

  • Orthodontist
  • Oral Surgery
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Periodontology
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Dental Public Health
  • Oral Medicine
  • Oral Pathology
  • Forensic Odontology

Apart from performing complicated clinical procedures and diagnoses, dentists are also responsible to brief their clients about dental care. As a general dentist, you oversee a practice, identify recruits, train and supervise personnel in addition to performing support roles.

Another breed of professionals is the hospital dentist. These experts handle dental cases that are more difficult, bizarre or even severe. Hospitals are the training grounds for dentists like orthodontists, dental surgeons, specialised dentists and maxillofacial prosthetists (experts who assist patients who require facial reconstruction surgery).

A majority of dentists are self-employed professionals who may take in a mix of private patients and NHS. This enables them to work at their own preferred hours, be it the evenings or on the weekends to cater to selected patients.

Dentists who ply their trade in hospitals are employed on a short contractual basis and have a more irregular working schedule.

Want to become a dentist? The road to becoming a qualified practitioner does not come without its own challenges. Students must have solid achievements and good grades in A- Level Biology and Chemistry subjects, in order to get approved to a dentistry degree course. You will also need to adopt the diligence to study and dedication to practise. Mastering the use and functions of your hands are also vital as they are your most valuable tools in dentistry. Additionally, with the rapid advancements in technology, you will need to be proficient in handling the latest machinery and equipment in the field.

In overall terms of career trajectory, dentists often become partners of practices, hospital specialists, and often even set up and oversee their very own practice.
