PETALING JAYA, 16 September 2018 – Hot grills raved a historical day at SEGi University with ‘The King of Satay Challenge 2018’ that was held in conjunction with Malaysia Day. The event which attracted over 200 visitors and participation from more than 80 budding satay masters from various hotels, restaurants, establishment and culinary schools was a great hit.

Participants showcased their talent and skills in preparation, grilling and serving techniques – using traditional and modern ways of serving satay in Malaysia’s gastronomique culinary industry. They were judged based on completion time, food hygiene, teamwork, presentation skills, and creativity in raw materials and seasonings applications. 

The satay challenge was jointly organised by the School of Hospitality and Tourism (SOHT) of SEGi University Kota Damansara, with the Malaysian Indian Chefs Association (MICA). MICA is led by President Chef Ricky Narayanan, who brings with him over 25 years of experience in the culinary industry.  

MICA, holds collaborations with Melaka Chefs Club, Gharwal Chefs Association (India), First Chefs Association of Brazil & Italy (Cuisine), Ristoworld Chefs (Italy), Aregala Malaysia, Aregala Turkiye, Perkumpulan Chef Professional Indonesia (PCPI) and is among academic sponsors, for namely, SEGi University Kota Damansara, Linton University College, and Silverspoon Culinary College.  

The aim of the collaborative effort was to provide a platform for youths to showcase their talents in culinary arts while increasing awareness on healthy and delicious cooking. This event is also as part of the marketing initiative of the Chilli Terengganu, the main sponsor of the challenge

A total of 14 professional judges were involved in the satay event, including the Chief Judge, Master Chef Sabri Hassan, the Executive Chef from Tamu Hotel Kuala Lumpur, who was impressed by the aspiring and skilful talents who handled the cooking process, preparation and grilling methods excellently. He also provided encouragement and advice to all the chefs who participated.

Chef Bonnie Lopez the Head of School from SOHT commended the event as being “a platform for culinary industry chefs to showcase their talents and elevate to the next level”. Meanwhile, Celebrity Chef Shirley Lo of PCPI Surabaya Indonesia concurred, and said that the competition was a great avenue for younger and older generation of chefs to meet up as well as to look out for new trends in the food and beverage industry. 

 “MICA and SOHT has done an excellent job in getting the ball rolling. We hope to collaboration more with them in the future with more culinary activities and events,” Shirley added. 

The winning pair, Ultimate Satay King Masters from New World Hotel Petaling Jaya, Muhammad Afiq Abdul Malek and Nur Effendy Mohammad Yusoff, walked home with a cash prize of RM700, trophy, certificates, hampers sponsored by Adabi as well as goodies bag sponsored by Chili Giling Terengganu and Malabar Cooking Oil. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi MARA duos Nur Aina Mohd Fadil-Shamsul Iqmar Shafiq Shamsul Hairi and Muhammad Nur Hakimi Harith-Aiman Ismail bagged the second and third place respectively.
