Soh Ye Kai, a recent Diploma in Accountancy graduate who is now pursuing the Bachelor of Accounting and Finance at SEGi University, has achieved an impressive milestone after emerging as Second Runner-up in a highly competitive equity research challenge held at Sunway University.

Organised by Sunway Business and Investment Society (SBIS) and sponsored by Crewstone Investment International and Singular Asset Management, the competition brought together 24 teams from various institutions, all tasked with pitching a stock from the S&P 500 as a BUY recommendation over the next 12 to 18 months. The challenge required participants to analyse industry outlooks, financial performance, catalysts for growth, and stock valuation models.

Soh and his teammates selected Stryker, a leading medical device company, citing its sustained growth rate, strong fundamentals, and promising future outlook. Their analysis covered the company’s background, industry trends, growth catalysts, and valuation projections, forming a comprehensive equity pitch aligned with real-world investment standards.

Following the release of the case on 15 September, the team worked intensively over two weeks to prepare for the presentation held on 29 September. Each group was allotted 10 minutes to deliver their pitch, followed by a 5-minute Q and A session with the judging panel.

Their clarity, confidence, and well-researched insights propelled them into the top five finalists, where they later secured Third Place overall.

Reflecting on the experience, Soh described the competition as both exciting and nerve-wracking.

“I felt nervous because I needed to present perfectly in front of the judges and the public. But I was really happy that I managed to deliver my points clearly. I enjoyed the entire process because it allowed me to learn more about financial analysis,” he shared.

He also expressed deep appreciation for his teammates, acknowledging their effort, commitment, and teamwork throughout the challenge.

Soh credits his achievement to the guidance and knowledge gained from SEGi’s Faculty of Business, Accountancy and Law (FOBAL).

“My faculty really helped me during the competition. I sought advice from my lecturer Mr. Muslim, and I applied what I learned from my other lecturer Ms. Shantiny’s financial classes during the competition. I really appreciate them as they provided me the support when I need it,” he said.

Although the team narrowly missed the championship title, Soh views the experience as a stepping stone rather than a setback. The insights gained, coupled with the constructive feedback received from industry judges, have strengthened the team’s determination to return stronger in future competitions.

With his strong foundation in finance and growing experience in real-world analytical challenges, Soh continues to set a positive example for fellow SEGi students, demonstrating how academic learning, practical exposure, and perseverance can open doors to meaningful achievements.

SEGi made an impactful mark at the 14th International Invention, Innovation and Design Competition 2025 (INDES 2025), held on 26 June at UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak. Represented by four Diploma in IT students—Lam Yong Qin, Lee Kai Min, Calvin Ng, and Cheong Kai Qi—the team proudly earned a Silver Medal under the “Sustainability of Life” category with their innovative project Trash Track, a smart waste management system driven by emerging technologies.

Combining Internet of Things (IoT) and image processing, Trash Track offers a working prototype that detects, categorises, and automatically sorts waste materials into designated bins. With real-time sensors and machine learning capabilities, the system accurately identifies plastics, organics, and paper—minimising human error, reducing contamination in recycling streams, and improving the overall efficiency of waste segregation. The project also collects live data for sustainability reporting and opens doors to incentive-based recycling initiatives through measurable behavioural tracking.

From 29 to 31 May 2025, SEGi etched its name on the global innovation stage as its Diploma in Information Technology students made a groundbreaking debut at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2025.

Among over 900 world-class inventions from 15 countries, including heavyweights like the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and Russia, SEGi’s youthful team—led by student innovator Lam Yong Qin—clinched a coveted Silver Medal in the fiercely contested Waste Management category. Their invention, “Trash Track”, not only turned heads but redefined what diploma-level innovation can achieve in the fight for global sustainability.

“Trash Track” is a web-based, IoT-integrated system featuring a prototype smart bin that detects and monitors waste accumulation in real time. It’s a high-impact solution with real-world scalability—especially crucial as the world generates over 2.24 billion tonnes of solid waste annually, of which only 55% is managed in controlled facilities, according to the World Bank.

On 5–6 July 2025, Soh Ye Kai, a Diploma in Accountancy student from the Faculty of Business, Accountancy & Law at SEGi emerged as 1st runner-up in the prestigious Business Case Study Competition organised by Xiamen University Malaysia and sponsored by Prudential. The competition brought together top student teams from universities across Malaysia to tackle real-world economic challenges, focusing on the gig economy and the evolving role of the insurance industry.

Competing against 10 teams, Soh and his group were tasked with pitching a comprehensive strategy to support gig workers through innovative insurance models. Their final proposal stood out with a bold idea: transform gig workers into insurance agents while offering exclusive discounts on insurance purchases tailored to this workforce segment. The concept addressed issues of financial protection, income generation, and long-term sustainability for a growing but underserved population.

SEGi University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences proudly secured a spot among the Top 15 teams at the International Microbiology Quiz Competition 2025 (iMICROBE’25), a prestigious event hosted by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) on 17 May. Outshining participants from across Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, the SEGi team ranked 7th in a field of 28 elite university teams, comprising 112 participants. This impressive achievement reaffirms SEGi’s commitment to cultivating high-performing healthcare students equipped for global impact.

Representing SEGi University were students Chit Min Thet, Lai Weng Sum, Clement Lee Wei Jie, and Peyrishka Shammini, who demonstrated exceptional mastery in microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases. Two final-year IT students from the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology showcased cutting-edge solutions that pushed the boundaries of AI and cybersecurity. Yong Wai Meng captured the Gold Award with Blink Wallet, an AI-powered face recognition digital payment solution, integrating multi-layered security through biometrics and intelligent verification. As digital payment fraud continues to rise globally — with projected losses exceeding USD 362 billion by 2028 — such innovations represent timely and much-needed technological interventions.
