SEGi University recently organised its Health Sciences Experience Day on 10 April 2026, bringing prospective students closer to the world of health sciences through a full day of hands on activities and interactive learning sessions. The event was designed especially for school leavers and individuals exploring healthcare related study pathways, giving them the opportunity to experience different disciplines before making one of the most important decisions for their future.

Throughout the day, participants were introduced to key Health Science programmes including Dentistry, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy and Medicine. Each session offered a practical glimpse into the learning environment, from clinical simulations and laboratory based exposure to guided demonstrations that reflected real healthcare practices.

Participants experienced how dental professionals create tooth impressions, explored eye tests used in optometry, learned about posture and body movement in physiotherapy, carried out blood grouping activities in biomedical science, observed pharmacy dispensing practices, and engaged with human anatomy through interactive learning. These activities helped students see that healthcare education is not only built on theory, but also on precision, confidence, problem solving and care.

More than just an introductory event, the Health Sciences Experience Day supported Damansara Medical EduHub’s role in providing early exposure to future healthcare learners. By allowing participants to discover different areas of health sciences in a practical and engaging setting, the initiative helped them better understand their interests, strengths and possible study options.

Through experiences like these, SEGi continues to create meaningful learning opportunities that prepare students to make informed choices about their future. SEGi University officially launched its Dual Award Degree partnership with the University of Chichester on 26 February 2026, marking a significant milestone in SEGi’s globalization strategy.

Through this collaboration, SEGi University will offer Dual Award Degrees in partnership with University of Chichester across key disciplines including Business, Accounting, Hospitality, Engineering and Master of Business Administration (MBA). Students enrolled in these programmes will graduate with two degree certificates within the same period of study, one awarded by SEGi University and the other by the University of Chichester in the United Kingdom.

This initiative reflects SEGi’s commitment to bringing world recognised universities and globally benchmarked qualifications directly onto its Malaysian campuses, making international academic excellence more accessible without requiring students to study abroad.

On 24 January 2026, the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences at SEGi University took part in a community based Corporate Social Responsibility programme at Dewan Blok C, PPR Kota Damansara. The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy as part of a wider community health screening programme focusing on dental and eye health.

The vision screening was led by Dr Foo Say Kiang, Dean of the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences, together with Mr Law Yi Zuo, and supported by nine Year 3 Optometry students. The student team comprised Hong Chong Yik, Hong Chung Ying, Edward Wong Teck Hao, Yap Yong Qi, Low Mei Kee, Clarice Cheok Weng Yen, Chay Zi Cheng, Liew Yie Jie, and Tan Yee Syuen. The programme provided students with hands on experience while delivering essential eye care services to the community.

Members of the community underwent a range of vision assessments, including visual acuity testing, colour vision testing, eye muscle assessment, and three dimensional vision assessment. These screenings aimed to identify potential visual issues early and raise awareness of the importance of regular eye examinations.

The programme received positive participation from the community, with steady engagement throughout the session. For the students, the outreach offered valuable exposure to mass vision screening and patient interaction beyond the clinical teaching environment. It also reinforced the role of optometrists in preventive eye care and community health education.

The Health Sciences Experience Day at SEGi University was designed with this in mind. Participants explored a range of disciplines including Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, and Biomedical Science. The Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences at SEGi University joined hands with Ogawa, a leading wellness brand, to promote eye health through a community-driven Eye Screening Event held on 18 and 19 October 2025 at 1 Utama Shopping Centre.

Bringing together healthcare professionals, students, and members of the public, the event transformed a weekend outing into an opportunity to learn, connect, and care for one of our most vital senses—sight.

Five Optometry students and two lecturers conducted free eye screenings, including visual acuity checks, colour blindness assessments, 3D vision tests, eye muscle evaluations, and dry eye examinations. Participants also received professional guidance and educational materials on maintaining long-term eye health.

For the students, this initiative was more than just clinical practice—it was an exercise in empathy, communication, and community service. By engaging directly with the public, they translated classroom knowledge into real-world impact, demonstrating the value of experiential learning and the importance of service in healthcare.

Ogawa’s participation introduced a holistic perspective to the event, showcasing wellness and eye massage products designed to promote relaxation, enhance circulation, and relieve stress—factors that play a crucial role in protecting overall eye health. Together, the collaboration reflected a shared mission to advance health awareness through education and innovation.

The strong turnout at 1 Utama underscored growing public interest in preventive eye care and the role of technology in health maintenance. Every consultation, every question, and every shared smile contributed to a broader vision—one where eye wellness becomes part of everyday self-care.

The SEGi Optometry Club (SOC) extended its commitment to community well-being through the Panching Village Health & Eye Screening, held on 21 September 2025 at Dewan Orang Ramai, Panching Village in Kuantan.

Organised in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kuantan, the Health Department of Pahang, Pfizer Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and the local Ketua Kampung, the event brought healthcare directly to residents who often face barriers to access. Rooted in the spirit of service and inclusion, the initiative supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — particularly ensuring good health and reducing inequalities — by bringing essential screening services to an underserved community.

Throughout the day, the hall transformed into a lively health hub where approximately 200 to 300 villagers from Panching and neighbouring areas received free health checks and eye screenings. Eighteen SEGi Optometry students, guided by two lecturers from the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences, conducted visual acuity assessments, refractive evaluations, and ocular health checks. Spectacles were dispensed to those who needed corrective lenses, offering immediate improvements in daily functioning. Individuals requiring further examination were referred to SEGi Eye-care or nearby hospitals for continued care.

For the students, this experience extended far beyond clinical practice. It became an immersion into real-world service — a chance to engage with diverse communities, strengthen communication, and cultivate the empathy essential in healthcare. This deeper exposure reflects SEGi’s commitment to experiential learning and supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by equipping students with the skills and values needed to serve society responsibly.

The presence of healthcare partners and community leaders reinforced the collective effort behind preventive health. Through education, early detection, and accessible care, the initiative demonstrated how collaborative outreach can reduce avoidable vision problems and improve quality of life.

The SEGi Optometry Club brought eye care directly to kindergarteners in Rawang through a meaningful community screening programme held at Tadika Senyum Mesra, organised in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kuantan, the Health Department of Pahang, Pfizer Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and the local Ketua Kampung.

What began as a simple screening day quickly became an opportunity to support children’s early development, empower educators, and create awareness around the importance of healthy vision in learning.

Under the guidance of two lecturers, eleven optometry students set up a series of age appropriate screening stations ranging from basic visual checks to assessments that help identify early signs of reduced vision. Their approach balanced professionalism with patience, ensuring every child felt comfortable, safe, and encouraged throughout the process.

Beyond the screenings, the children were engaged through an interactive sharing session led by committee member Teng Zhi Yee, who introduced them to simple, memorable ways to care for their eyes. From recognising changes in vision to understanding why regular check ups matter, the session helped translate health knowledge into everyday habits.

Several children who showed signs of reduced vision were referred to SEGi Eyecare or their nearest hospital for further examination, ensuring they received proper follow up care. For many families, this early detection may prevent long term learning challenges and improve overall well being.

For the student volunteers, the experience offered more than clinical exposure — it strengthened their communication skills, reinforced empathy, and reminded them of the profound role healthcare professionals play in underserved communities. It was a lesson in service, teamwork, and real world responsibility.

Students and staff from the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences (FoOVS) at SEGi University participated in two major international conferences — the 5th Global Orthokeratology and Myopia Control Conference (GOMCC) and the 3rd Optometry Vietnam Conference (OVC) — held in Hanoi, Vietnam from 22 to 24 August 2025. The conferences brought together more than 780 eye care professionals from around the world, creating an engaging platform for learning, exchange and professional growth.

For SEGi’s optometry students, this international gathering was far more than an academic event. It was a chance to step beyond the classroom, gain global exposure, and witness how eye care innovation continues to evolve on an international stage.

Among the highlights was the participation of final-year students Dawn Lah Le Xuan and Low Wency, who presented their final-year research projects through poster presentations. In addition, Dawn Lah Le Xuan, Ling Chia Hao, and Tan Pei Thong shared their clinical insights through an oral clinical case presentation — demonstrating the confidence, clarity and maturity that SEGi nurtures in its future optometrists.

The conference also featured a workshop conducted by Mr Fakhruddin, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences and a board member of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE). His session brought together educators, researchers and practitioners to discuss current trends in clinical teaching and contact lens education, highlighting SEGi’s active presence in global optometry conversations.

During their time in Hanoi, the SEGi team also participated in an academic exchange at Hanoi Medical University (HMU). Students visited the facilities of the Optometry and Ophthalmology departments and took part in discussions on curriculum, training and clinical exposure. They also had the privilege of learning from Professor Bruce Moore, a renowned paediatric optometrist, Professor Emeritus of the New England College of Optometry, and Honorary Professor at Hanoi Medical University. His sharing provided valuable insights into paediatric eye care and global best practices.

Innovation meets community impact through the SPECTRUCK Outreach Programme, a remarkable collaboration between the Interior Architecture Programme and the Faculty of Optometry at SEGi University. This initiative empowered students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings by designing a functional and innovative optometry space for SKJC Sungai Buloh, directly benefiting the school and its surrounding community.

Practical, hands-on experience is essential in developing future-ready graduates, and this project provided an invaluable learning opportunity. Research shows that over 70% of employers prefer graduates with real-world project experience (World Economic Forum, 2023), underscoring the importance of integrating academic knowledge with practical application. Through this initiative, students not only sharpened their design skills but also contributed meaningfully to society.

Bridging design and healthcare, the project ensured that the new optometry space met high standards of functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics. The winning design, crafted by Sophea Sara, demonstrated an innovative approach to optimising space for efficient eye care services. Alongside Sophea, students Lee Yong Le, Ivan Tan Kah Chun, and Ho Qiao Er played instrumental roles in bringing the project to life, showcasing teamwork, creativity, and technical expertise.
