The Faculty of Pharmacy at SEGi University recently organised a Medication Disposal Awareness and Public Education Campaign, bringing healthcare education closer to the community while giving students meaningful exposure beyond the classroom.

The campaign was led by Ms Abileshini Venkatesan and Ms Chia Lee Huang, academicians from the Faculty of Pharmacy, and actively carried out by Year 1 Bachelor of Pharmacy students. It was also aligned with SEGi University’s ongoing direction, championed by the Vice Chancellor, to strengthen the visibility of healthcare disciplines through practical, community-based initiatives.

Focusing on the issue of improper medication disposal, the campaign aimed to raise awareness on how unused, expired, or unwanted medicines should be handled safely. Many people may not realise that throwing medications into household waste or flushing them away can lead to environmental contamination, accidental poisoning, medication misuse, and other public health concerns.

Through this initiative, students helped educate members of the public on safer medication disposal practices and the important role pharmacists play in protecting both community health and the environment. Visitors were engaged through informative sharing sessions, awareness materials, and interactive activities designed to make healthcare knowledge simple, practical, and relevant to daily life.

An educational quiz was also conducted to encourage public participation and reinforce key messages in a more engaging way. The activity allowed visitors to test their understanding while learning useful information on responsible medication use and disposal.

For the Year 1 pharmacy students, the campaign was a valuable early learning experience. It allowed them to communicate directly with the public, practise teamwork, build confidence, and apply their classroom knowledge in a real community setting. More importantly, it gave them a clearer understanding of the pharmacist’s role as a healthcare educator, advisor, and advocate for safer healthcare practices.

The initiative also highlighted SEGi University’s commitment to developing future healthcare professionals who are not only academically prepared, but also socially aware and ready to contribute meaningfully to the communities they serve. By involving students from as early as their first year of study, the Faculty of Pharmacy continues to create opportunities for students to grow through hands-on learning, public engagement, and purposeful outreach.

The Faculty of Pharmacy extends its appreciation to all members of the public who took part in the campaign and congratulates the students for representing SEGi University with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Through initiatives such as this, healthcare education at SEGi University continues to move beyond lecture halls and into the community, where knowledge can create real awareness, inspire better habits, and support healthier lives.
