29th May 2008 - Orientation Day is normally a somber affair with new students getting to know the college’s rules and regulations, contact details of each department, familiarizing themselves with the lecturers, and getting to know the facilities offered.

For SEGi College Kuala Lumpur, the senior students decided to put an end to such an uninteresting approach to college life! The Student Council took it upon themselves to organize their own version of what an orientation day should be like – having fun in the process of making new friends!

Peggy Tang, student council president, lead the council members in the planning of the orientation day. “It should be fun, not just about studies. We want the new students to feel part of the SEGi family.”

About 200 new and old students turned up for the event, filling the hall to its maximum capacity. The council organised fun games to break the ice, but started off first with lunch to fill their bellies before the fun began. The participants were treated to nasi lemak and a bottle of water each.

“We divided the crowd into groups of 20 students each, making out 10 groups. This was necessary for us to play the games we had planned,” shared Peggy.

The fun started with Musical Box and Dance with Me. Musical Box was a combination of old children classic of passing a box while the music plays but with a twist in it as once the music stops, the person with the box needs to pull out a piece of paper from it, and to act out the word on the paper.

“Musical box was hilarious as a lot of the students did their best to be sporting about it, acting out the words drew heaps of laughter. Laughter is the best way to break the ice!,” explained Peggy.

Dance with Me was a more physically challenging game with students having to keep up with the dance movements of the college’s dance enthusiasts. This was followed by the SCKL Treasure Hunt.

“All the students were really geared up for this event. I guess it is because we’ve seen so many reality shows that we get excited over such races/hunts. The students have to search around the various buildings surrounding the college, looking for clues which in turn lead to certain items and sometimes a person,” said Peggy. “Some of the groups were required to do certain tasks before getting the next clue, such as signing the National anthem and also performing other tasks.”

The last event of the day was Hairspray, where groups were to design the most creative and innovative hairstyle on one of their team members.

Points were being given for each game. The top 3 groups that emerged victorious on all the games played were presented with prizes awarded by Gary Tan, Marketing Manager and Head Advisor of the Student Council.

“I am very glad of the outcome of today’s event. I believe our student council this year will come up with bigger and better activities to vie last year’s council,” praised Tan.
