Monday, 21st April 2008, was a historical day for Malaysia as well as SEGi College Kuala Lumpur (SCKL) as they were actively involved in the Olympic Torch Run.
SCKL students from all faculties witnessed and participated in this event. What more, the international students from China were also all out in full support of the event as they were proud that they home country is to host this year’s Olympic Games.
“It is such a rare occasion for us that we had to let our students all participate in it. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we’re extremely excited to be part of it,” said Hew Moi Lan, Principal of SEGi College Kuala Lumpur.
Students and staff were out in full force when the torch relay started its run in Dataran Merdeka, shouting slogans and waving their national flags at the same time dressed in some specially designed T-shirts.
“We arranged for a group of students to hike all the way through the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve to reach KL Tower and lined along the designated pathway for the torch relay. Hundreds of SEGi students were involved. All were dressed in special T-shirts sponsored by Muzium Telekom for the event. They were also given other goodies such as flags and banners to wave at the torch relay team,” added Hew.
KL Tower was bustling with activities as early as 3.00pm in the afternoon. Many school students from around the KL area were seen there in their school uniforms. SEGi students represented the biggest crowd and received special compliments from the organizers. SEGi senior management staff were also on hand cheering on the crowd.
The Olympic torch arrived at the foot of the KL Tower around 5.00pm and started to make its way up to the pinnacle of the tower. That honourable duty was carried out by none other than the country’s angkasawan, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor. Upon reaching the pinnacle of the KL Tower, two ‘base jumpers’ parachuted from the top of the KL Tower and made their way down. This was the highlight of the torch relay event.
As the Olympic Torch made its way down from the summit of the KL Tower to make its way to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC), it was already a downpour, but it does not dampen the spirit of all those present as we bear witness to the true spirit of ‘Malaysia Boleh!’
The Olympic torch run was certainly a talking point for the staff and students for the week as it inspired them to do more.
