S6 private colleges signed the MOA with the Ministry of Health to offer practical training in government hospitals and clinics

18 September 2007 - A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the Ministry of Health and 6 private colleges, amongst which two of the private colleges are part of the SEGi Group of Colleges. The MOA was to allow nursing students have practical training and usage of government hospitals and clinics.
YB Datuk Dr. Hj. Abdul Latiff Ahmad, Deputy Minister of Health, was on hand to officiate the signing ceremony that afternoon.
“The MOA signing today is in line with the development of human resources in terms of increasing quality health care services. As the industry grows, there is a definite need to have continuous improvement in the training of healthcare employees,” said YB Datuk Dr. Hj. Abdul Latiff Ahmad.
According to YB Datuk Dr. Hj. Abdul Latiff Ahmad, the development of the healthcare human resources is not only to cater for the local needs, but for the global healthcare needs as well.
“The quality of nurses we are to produce should meet the standards of the global healthcare community for we are looking at exporting our expertise to overseas. As such, we hold high importance in the quality of our nursing graduates,” added YB Datuk Dr. Hj. Abdul Latiff Ahmad.
SEGi College, Malaysia at Kota Damansara and SEGi College Kuala Lumpur has been offering recognised nursing diploma programme since last year. The Diploma in Nursing is approved and recognised by the Malaysian Nursing Board.
“Signing the MOA signifies a chance for our students to have a balanced education as nursing is a very hands-on practical profession as it focuses on human interaction,” said Dr. Wong Wah Hun, Dean of Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences of SEGi College, Malaysia at Kota Damansara.
According the Dr. Wong, having the opportunity to have practical training in hospitals and clinics provide a healthy balance of theoretical and practical training.
“SEGi believes strongly in producing industry driven graduates. We place an importance with industry training or placement for our graduating students, with that we have launched the Career Exploratory Programme early this year. The MOA with the Ministry of Health today strengthens our claim to industry ready graduates and also a step up for our nursing programme,” added Dr. Wong.
The Faculty of Nursing at SEGi intends to create ripples in the health care practice by imparting to students the scientific basis of nursing and its application in the holistic care of patients to enable them to participate actively and effectively as members of the health care team.
“Holders of the SEGi Diploma in Nursing are able to access many employment opportunities in the fields of clinical nursing, healthcare, education and management, both locally and aboard. They can hold positions as registered nurse, nursing supervisors, managers in hospitals, educators, industrial nurse, or as product specialists,” said Dr. Wong.
According to Dr. Wong, SEGi lecturers are selected based on their qualification and experience in the industry. “We place great emphasis on our lecturers having to have industrial experience. For example, our nursing lecturers have years of hospital and clinical experience.”
SEGi College has invested heavily on ensuring that its nursing facilities are modern and meets the highest standards set by the Malaysian Nursing Board. The College is equipped with simulation wards, skills laboratory, computer labs, pratical rooms and a well stocked library.
