Kuala Lumpur – The signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Youth & Sports and listed private education and training provider SEG International Bhd has taken the public-private partnership to new heights.
The current training centres owned and managed by the ministry are insufficient to provide places for the 30,000 odd applicants for skill based courses each year.
To try to achieve its training capacity, the ministry has an outsourcing scheme since 2002 through the buying places available in private entities with the requisite facilities and qualified human resources.
Under the 9th Malaysian Plan, the ministry will give emphasis on human capital development, and hence, Program Belia Cemerlang was conceived in collaboration with SEG International Bhd (SEGi) to hasten the training of youths in the country. |
SEGi has provided value-added features to the Program by providing additional curriculum on character building and entrepreneurship as well as job placement services for the trained youths.
SEGi, as the prime mover of Program Belia Cemerlang, is expected to work together with a group of bumiputera-owned training providers in strategic locations to offer greater geographical spread.
The first intake of 400 trainees is scheduled to start their courses in June. The ministry intends to train 10,000 youths each year under the Program.
The courses to be offered include those on both hard and soft skills, with strong bias towards employability and marketability of the trained youths.
Signing on behalf of the government is the Youth & Sports Ministry's Secretary General, Dato' Mohd. Arif bin Abu Bakar, while SEGi's chairman Dato' Pahamin Rajab represented the education and training group. The Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman witnessed the signing and exchange of documents.
