Graduations are always memorable occasions; there is a surreal feeling about the whole event; a single ceremony to recognise years of hard work, determination and sacrifice, not only by the students but also the family and friends who have play such a pivotal role in the achievements of the graduands.

Looking on at the faces of the 215 students graduating from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia (USQ), it was clear to see that all the sacrifice and hard-work had been worth the effort; as they sat patiently though the ceremony.

The graduation ceremony at Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on the 29th of March was a day to recognise and celebrate the success of the achievements of the graduating students. The ceremony that was divided into two sessions saw the Postgraduate students receiving their Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the 10am ceremony, while the ceremony for the Undergraduate students receiving their Bachelor in Arts was held at 4pm.

Congratulating the students on their achievement, Mrs. Bobbie Brazil, the Chancellor of The University of Southern Queensland, said that graduations do not mark the end of a journey but rather open a new chapter in the professional and personal development of the graduates.

“As you step out of the hall today, know that this is not the end, for it is only the beginning; a beginning of a new chapter in life, one with opportunities to take you further in life. Take the knowledge that you have acquired and use it to shape your path toward a better tomorrow,” said Mrs. Brazil.

Mrs. Brazil, who travelled from Australia to give her welcoming address, said that the lecturers and staff had a huge role in shaping the students.

“I am very impressed with SEGi; it is indeed pleasing to know that everyone in SEGi, including the staff, are dedicated towards a common objective. I am happy to say that the staff and students of SEGi have proven their commitment beyond expectations”, adding that it is because of these qualities SEGi will continue to grow and produce skilled graduates.

Tourism Minister Dato’ Sri Dr. Azalina Othman Said was present at the event to receive an Honorary Doctorate, which was presented to her by the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Bill Lovegrove, conferring upon her the title ‘Dr.

The University of Southern Queensland presented the minister with the honorary doctorate in recognition of her “outstanding service towards the development of youths and exemplary dedication in serving the people of Malaysia”.

Upon accepting her latest achievement, Azalina said she was “proud, flattered and grateful” that a well established university had chosen to present her with this honour.

In her speech to the students, Dato’ Sri Dr. Azalina said that, for many years she has served as a Member of Parliament, a member of the Malaysian Government’s Cabinet, and as a public figure; however the journey was never easy. It was blessed with both ups and downs.

“The ‘ups’ have been memorable, but it was the ‘downs’ which have shaped me into what I am today. I say blessed, because I believe in life, making mistakes every once in a while, is beneficial when you learn from it. As a famous musician once said, ‘Success is falling nine times and getting up ten’,” reminding the students that they should never stop trying.
