15th May 2006

The inaugural 8tv-SEGi Scholarships were awarded to nine Malaysian scholars, who hailed from all over the country. The nine students, selected from 500 applications submitted from all over the country, will attend courses dealing with Finance & Accounting, Business & Commerce, Science & Engineering and Creative Arts and Design.

These nine scholars stand to benefit from the RM300,000 8TV-SEGi Scholarship Fund, which was set up in March this year to benefit qualified students who have excelled in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) examinations as well as in extra-curricular activities.

“Their qualifications and calibre have proven to us they truly are the cream of the crop,” said 8TV Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Izham Omar. “We at 8TV now wait in anticipation and look forward to hearing more about the academic achievements of these young scholars whom we expect to see graduating with flying colours over the next one to 3 years.”

The 8TV-SEGi Scholarship Fund valued at RM300,000 was set up to benefit high calibre scholars, who also happen to fall within the core target audience of 8TV, comprising youths and adults. Izham said the fund clearly demonstrates 8TV's appreciation of the loyal viewers' support and is an effort to give back to the community.

Mr. Lee Kok Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of SEGi College said that SEGi aims to strike a balance between business and social responsibility. “One of the best was of giving back to the community is to run our social investment programmes in partnership with organisations such as 8TV who share our objectives, common approaches and synergistic resources,” added Lee.

“We are especially impressed by the fact that these young adults who will be our future leaders of business and industry are also serious about furthering their education,” said Izham, referring to how to applicants have stood up to the rigors of the application and screening process.

The 8TV-SEGi Scholarship Fund will cover tuition fees for undergraduate degree, diploma or foundation level programmes of successful applicants. The scholars have all been offered places at Segi Colleges both within the Klang Valley and in Penang .

Receiving the scholarships from 8TV are Toh Joo Lee, Mok Shu Qing, Ang Kian Tiong, Sarah Tan Su Yin, Bhajan Kaur D/o Haroev Singh, Lee Ying Loong, Mohd Aszerul Nizam, Chong Yi Hao and Alicia Mun May May.

For Sarah Tan Su Yin, her grades were definitely a factor of her success in being selected for the scholarship. Achieving 10As in the SPM exam, Sarah vows to be a TV addict and has an active social life. At her former school of SMK USJ 13, Sarah was Prefect Group Leader, a school cheerleader and the International Understanding Director of the Interact Club.

SPM 10As achiever, Ang Kian Tiong was selected for the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering programme. A former student of MRSM Balik Pulau, Ang balances his activities of academic, sports and community service.

“When I saw the advertisement on 8TV that they were offering scholarships, I thought it wouldn't do any harm to apply. So I applied and was called for the interview. The interview process was a rather emotional experience for me, but I smiled a lot and tried to be myself,” shared Ang. “I'm grateful for the chance and now I get to study for a programme I truly want. I hear that SEGi's engineering programme is one of the more prestigious private engineering programmes in the country, and I am thankful to be selected for it.”

Another high achiever, Bhajan Kaur will be Ang's course-mate as she is also selected for the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering programme. Like Ang, Bhajan also studied at a MRSM but located in Jasin. Bhajan's choice of applying for the scholarship is because she loves the entertainment she receives from 8TV and SEGi College is a recognised and has good standing.

“One of the questions during the interview that got to me was How would you help the orphans? That got me thinking about playing my part in society and that I should be thankful for the many blessings I have as there are people out there who are less fortunate than I am,” reflected Bhajan Kaur.

Alicia Mun May May aspires to be a journalist and was overjoyed to receive the scholarship for Diploma in Advertising Design. The former student of SMK Seafield scored 10As in last year's SPM examination. “I want to be able to make a difference in the world through my writing,” said Alicia.

The scholarship awards further deepens 8TV's relationship with SEGi College , after the latter had earlier appointed 8TV's Malaysian Idols, Jaclyn Victor and Daniel Lee as SEGi College ambassadors. Jaclyn and Daniel were chosen because, as youths who gained success through hard work and guidance, they are role models of students to emulate.
