Petaling Jaya, 15 students were present to receive 8TV Scholarship Fund at Sri Pentas here today. The scholarship recipients, selected from over 420 applications submitted all over the country, will pursue their diploma and bachelor degrees in disciplines such as business, finance, psychology, engineering, early childhood education, creative arts and design.
This is the second year that students had benefited from the 8TV Scholarship Fund, supported by SEGi Group of Colleges (SEGi). The aim of the scholarship is to provide opportunities for school leavers to pursue tertiary education with one of the largest private education groups in the country.
The 15 stand to benefit from the RM800,000 fund, which was set up two years ago to benefit qualified students who have excelled in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) examinations as well as in extra-curricular activities. The scholarship committee, which comprises members from both 8TV and SEGi, also select students who are confident, outspoken and possess the X-Factor. According to En. Ahmad Izham Omar, the CEO of 8TV, “We look out for young people who are at ease with themselves and who are able to articulate their viewpoints clearly. We must also be equally comfortable talking to them.”
When asked about the purpose of the scholarship fund, Lee Kok Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of SEGi Group of Colleges said that the education group aims to strike a balance between business and social responsibilities.
Lam Swee Kim, General Manager Business Development, Marketing & Communication at 8TV added, ”The fund clearly demonstrates 8TV’s appreciation of the loyal viewers’ support and is an effort to give back to the community. We are grateful to SEGi College in supporting the 8TV Scholarship for the second year.”
The 8TV Scholarship Fund covers tuition fees for undergraduate degree and diploma programmes in disciplines such as business, engineering, psychology, creative arts & design, and early childhood education. The scholars have all been offered places at SEGI campuses located in Kota Damansara, Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Penang, Sarawak and SEGi College of Technology at Kuala Lumpur.

These young adults have impressed the scholarship selection committee, and are geared to be future leaders of business and industry. “They have also demonstrated that they are serious about furthering their education,” Ahmad Izham further elaborated, referring to how applicants have stood up to the rigours of the application and screening process.
“Their qualifications and calibre have proven that they are truly the cream of the crop. “We at 8TV now wait in anticipation and look forward to hearing more about their academic and other achievements in college in the next 2 to 3 years,” Ahmad Izham said.
According to 18 years-old, She Ai Li from Subang Jaya, “I am really looking forward to studying in SEGi College because it is a renowned college and they offer courses that suit me.I plan to take up the |
American Degree Programme, majoring in Management and Communication. I like to meet and deal with people, and I have profound interest in public relations.” She Ai Li achieved outstanding results in her SPM and was awarded outstanding achievement for obtaining 10As in 2006. She aspires to be a prominent figure in public relations.
Another scholar, Tan Mun Yee said, “I am overjoyed to be the selected few who are awarded this scholarship. The fund will definitely help me achieve my goal to pursue my ambition as a chartered accountant.” Tan Mun Yee is the only daughter of two siblings and her hobbies include drawing and swimming. She was a school prefect since primary school and loves to listen to pop music.
“The 8TV Scholarship is awarded not only to students that are outstanding in their studies, but we also look for active students, who are outgoing and exceptional. Their personalities and previous curricular activities play a major role in our selection too,” Lee elaborated.
“I was involved in my school’s Girl Guides Association, Bowling Club, PRS Club, Consumer Club and Prefects’ Club. I love to read and my favourite music genre is R&B. In 2004 I was received outstanding awards for excellent results in PMR and in 2006 I received an SPM excellence award”, said Michelle Daphne Pereira. Michelle studied in S.M.K. Puteri, Seremban and idolises her father, Peter Celestine Pereira.
SEGi College’s ties with 8TV are further strengthened with the scholarship collaboration and its recent partnership in producing the first job seeking reality show in Malaysia - Please Give Me A Job! The nine-part series feature 10 fresh graduates who were introduced to the real and tough working world, taking on different tasks each week in the hope to get “a job” by the end of the episode. Please Give Me A Job! wrapped its final episode on June 10th.
