Over the weekend, SEGi College Subang Jaya, in collaboration with the Malaysian Child Resource Institute, organised the Child Advocacy Workshop 2011. The workshop, which was held on the 2nd of July 2011, was attended by more than 60 Early Childhood Care & Education degree and diploma students from SEGi College Subang Jaya. Staff from the Malaysian Child Resource Institute ran the workshop, using a method of presentation known as the Open Space Technology, where it is an “approach for hosting meetings, conferences, corporate-style retreats and community summit events, focused on a specific and important purpose or task—but beginning without any formal agenda, beyond the overall purpose or theme”. What is special about this method of presentation is that instead of being tied down by the agenda of the meeting, participants are allowed to take charge in discussions on topics of their interest. The objectives of the said workshop are to understand the role of a child advocate and the guiding principles and also learn how children's rights provide a powerful framework and a tool for advocacy. Participants also discovered the knowledge and skills to be an effective child advocate and developed an action plan which is aligned to the mission of a child advocate. Malaysian Child Resource Institute (MCRI) was incorporated in 1993 as a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting child rights and quality early childhood care and education. Together with SEGi College Subang Jaya, another step in the right direction for child advocacy has been made through this workshop. |
