Pharmacy is the branch of medical science concerned with the sources, nature, properties, preparation and safe effective use of medicinal drugs. Pharmacists are key professionals in the health care system who formulate and dispense drugs and work closely with doctors and patients in providing advice on the management of a patient’s medication. The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to patient care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information, as well as discovery and development of new drugs. Due to the rapid growth of the health care system, the increasing elderly population, and the booming pharmaceutical and biotech industry, there is unprecedented demand for pharmacists today, which has resulted in a shortage of qualified pharmacists in Malaysia and worldwide. With the amazing developments in science that will lead to the introduction of new generation of medicines for all kinds of illnesses and diseases, pharmacists will be involved with these new medicines every step of the way, from their development in the lab to their distribution in the community and in hospitals. Most importantly, the pharmacist’s role in society is to promote the well-being of their patients.

A degree in Pharmacy prepares the graduate for a variety of job roles with opportunities available across the health-care provision. Upon graduation and registration with the Pharmacy Board of Malaysia and/or the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, a majority of pharmacists will work in the community pharmacies, hospitals, become industrial pharmacists, or studying for a higher degree, however, there are also other exciting opportunities emerging.
