This innovative BEng (Hons) Degree programme is offered
both as a distance learning course to Independent Learners
and as an on-campus course to students able to attend
Sunderland or one its sister centres around the world. The oncampus
full-time course consists only of the third level of the
programme and is available to suitably qualified students who
have attained an HND in Electronic and Electrical Engineering
or equivalent. Independent Learners, of course, may elect to
join the on-campus programme having completed their Level
1 and 2 modules. The programme covers the fields of both
Electronics System Design and Electrical Power Engineering,
SCADA and PLCs and Operations Management. Appraisal of
a student’s prior academic achievement is necessary in most
cases, and possible bridging module studies advised where
necessary, in order to achieve a smooth transition to final year
study. Currently we have sister centres of study offering this
course in Havering College at the Centre for Manufacturing
Excellence near Dagenham, Essex, Tyndale Electronics School
in Singapore, Segi group of Colleges in Malaysia and Hong
Kong College of Technology.
It would ideally suit a person qualified to Diploma level or
working at technician level with ambition to move into technical
management, or a more senior engineer who has encountered
a glass ceiling due to the lack of a degree. Students follow the
same text based materials as off-campus Independent Learner
students and take the same exam papers but they have the
added advantage of being tutored by subject experts, most
of whom have been responsible for writing the original course
material. Added to this there are the advantages of using
the additional and easily accessible resources of the School
to complete practical work related to each module, making
the option of attendance as a full-time student an attractive
alternative to independent study.
Current BEng programmes are accredited by the Institution
of Incorporated Engineering (IIE) and accreditation of the new
BEng suite of programme is being sought. The recognition can
prove invaluable when seeking employment.
