The University of Southern Queensland is a leader in flexible learning, has a significant profile in regionally relevant research and is closely engaged with its communities. The University has over 26,000 enrolments, including 7,500 international students.

USQ was awarded the Commonwealth of Learning Award of Excellence for Institutional Achievement in July 2004. Other awards include the Joint Winner of the Good Universities Guide University of the Year 2000-2001 Award in 1999, as well as the Inaugural Award for Excellence from the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) recognizing the university as a world leader in ‘dual mode’ education. Academics and staff of USQ were recognized as best university teachers, who have made a significant contribution to the quality of student learning over a sustainable period at the 2006 Carrick Awards and Citations respectively.

This program is designed to prepare students to work in early childhood care and educational settings. It is an expectation that graduates will acquire, at a level appropriate to their stage of professional development, a knowledge and understanding of:

  • relevant legislation, policy and guidelines underpinning care and educational programs and services
  • how humans develop and how they learn
  • relevant curriculum content and structure
  • learning as a lifelong endeavour
  • human relationships
  • education theory and its interpretation in practice
  • a variety of care and education systems
  • the curriculum documents in current use and under consideration in local educational environments
  • broad care and education discipline areas - their concepts, content knowledge, structure, relationships and characteristic modes of inquiry
  • the role of the whole community in the learning process
 

The Bachelor of Early Childhood aims to develop students who will:

  • develop an awareness of childhood and child-centred practices that impact on early childhood care and education
  • promote acceptance of diversity amongst individual children within family and community contexts
  • develop safe, healthy and child-responsive environments
  • create flexible, aesthetic and adaptable learning environments that are responsive to the diverse abilities of all children
  • promote and abide by a code of ethics for early childhood professionals
  • contribute to developing continuity between care programs, early childhood education and primary school education
  • develop knowledge and beliefs about the emergent curriculum and whole-child philosophies
  • emphasise the integrated nature of creativity and problem-centred learning in early childhood care and education
  • develop critical reflection on emerging trends that impact on early childhood care and education and the rights of children and families to access quality care and education
  • demonstrate an understanding of how children develop and learn
  • accept all children as individuals with unique characteristics
  • clearly articulate and demonstrate beliefs and understandings about early childhood curriculum and philosophy
  • critically reflect and take action upon emerging trends and policies that impact on early childhood care and education
  • demonstrate a commitment to lifelong care and education
